Nevertheless this is the most ‘family friendly’ film in the Transformers universe, and unlike the earlier instalments the action here is thankfully coherent. At its core it’s really a coming of age movie – the story of a troubled teenager whose life is changed by an unexpected visitor.I was pleasantly surprised. I think you might enjoy it too. I’m going with three out of five for Bumblebee.

‘Bumblebee’ immediately sets itself apart from that approach, aiming towards a character-driven narrative rather than chaotic set-pieces that stumble over themselves as things go boom. This isn’t to say the action is lacking – far from it! The fight sequences are easy to follow, and the CGI is practically seamless. Despite all the major plot points being typically predictable, credit is due to Travis Knight for achieving what one deemed impossible – erasing pretty much all memory of this film’s problematic predecessors. ‘Bumblebee’ is certainly the best example of what this franchise is meant to be, and should it continue this path, the Transformers can become exciting and enjoyable all over again.

To call Bumblebee the best movie in the Transformers series wouldn’t be a stretch. But it would be damning with faint praise – like saying that Baby is the best Justin Bieber song, or that frying is the best way to cook a horse’s intestines. For a series that was on the verge of being dismantled and sold for scraps, much like Bumblebee, it has found a saviour. Knight has lived up to his name. The Transformers can wear his shiny armour.

Both Charlie and Bee have faced loss and are broken in different ways, and the film uses that human-machine connection to craft a well-meaning tale of compassion and friendship. That is the true emotional core, which is why Bumblebee doesn’t allow itself to be side tracked by the potential human suitor in Memo, a relationship it instigates but always keeps from being driven down a predictable route, right till the very end. There’s no way to fix the sexualisation, the robotic mess, and the endless backstory expansion perpetuated by Bay in past entries, but Bumblebee does set the Transformers franchise on a promising new path, one that inevitable future instalments — multiple prequels and spin-offs are in development — could do well to learn from.
